Why it works to keep your web design simple

It can be difficult to figure out just what you want to put on your website, let alone what you want it to accomplish. With the multitude of different gadgets, applications and media formats that can now be easily placed onto a website, it's not uncommon to be intimidated by all of the choices available to you.

Given the variety of options web designers, web developers and project managers can all find it hard to settle on the right approach to a web design. It can be easy to get the balance wrong and I think we've all visited a website or two that failed to engage us, whether because of an overload of information or relying too much on flashy add-ons.

The recent progression in web design says that simplicity is king - people want to get to information and don't like when things get in their way, even if they are nice to look at (an intro screen for example).

A clear and logical navigation system is a vital part of an effective minimalist website. You don't want to reinvent the wheel with your navigation, use the standards that people are comfortable with and they will get through your website faster and browse your products and services without any hassle. Users don't want to spend time working out the navigation on a website so make it totally clear what you do and what you want them to do.

Are you selling products on your website? Point them towards the catalogue page and employ the shopping cart standards that people are used to. Do you want people to call up and enquire about services? Explain what you do concisely and have your phone number visible at all times. Remove any clutter from the website and edit all content down until you are left with only the essential information that needs to be there.

Another great advantage to a minimalist style of web design is that it cuts down on administration and maintenance costs. A simple design will involve less content, making it quicker to update, and will utilise less applications and new technologies which means less downtime and maintenance work on your website.

You can see that it makes sense to have a clean and simple design, so sit down with your web designer and discuss creating a minimal and sophisticated look for your website.
